Hello There, VivBounty here with a story re-printed here from my friend Gail who used to work at the Noah’s Arc.

A Must Read if you have a dog

Very important information for dog owners…..

If you have a dog … PLEASE read this and send it on. If you don’t have a dog, please pass along to friends who do.

This week I had the first case in history of raisin toxicity ever seen at MedVet. My patient was a 56-pound, 5 yr old male neutered lab mix that ate half a canister of raisins sometime between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM on Tuesday. He started with vomiting, diarrhea and shaking about 1 AM on Wednesday but the owner didn’t call my emergency service until 7 AM.

I had heard somewhere about raisins AND grapes causing acute Renal failure but hadn’t seen any formal paper on the subject. We had her bring the dog in immediately. In the meantime, I called the ER service at MedVet, and the doctor there was like me – had heard something about it, but…

Anyway, we contacted the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center and they said to give IV fluids at 1 & 1/2 times maintenance and watch the kidney values for the next 48-72 hours. The dog’s BUN (blood urea nitrogen level) was already at 32 (normal less than 27) and creatinine over 5 (1.9 is the high end of normal). Both are monitors of kidney function in the bloodstream. We placed an IV catheter and started the fluids. Rechecked the renal values at 5 PM and the BUN was over 40 and creatinine over 7 with no urine production after a liter of fluids. At that point I felt the dog was in acute renal failure and sent him on to MedVet for a urinary catheter to monitor urine output overnight as well as overnight care. He started vomiting again overnight at MedVet and his renal values continued to increase daily. He produced urine when given lasix as a diuretic.

He was on 3 different anti-vomiting medications and they still couldn’t control his vomiting. Today his urine output decreased again, his BUN was over 120, his creatinine was at 10, his phosphorus was very elevated and his blood pressure, which had been staying around 150, skyrocketed to 220 … He continued to vomit and the owners elected to Euthanize.

This is a very sad case – great dog, great owners who had no idea raisins could be a toxin. Please alert everyone you know who has a dog of this very serious risk. Poison control said as few as 7 raisins or grapes could be toxic. Many people I know give their dogs grapes or raisins as treats including our ex-handler’s. Any exposure should give rise to immediate concern. Onions, chocolate, cocoa, avocadoes and macadamia nuts can be fatal, too. Even if you don’t have a dog, you might have friends who do. This is worth passing on to them.

Thank you so much, Gail! Hopefully it will save some lives and pet lovers a lot of heart ache.

May I also remind you all that your dog’s diet is paramount. If you are what you eat, isn’t your dog what he or she eats? In addition, your dog cannot and should not eat everything that you do. Do yourself a favour and grab the e-book “Dieting Your Dog” by filling in the form under the book cover to the right here and get more years together with proper nutrition.

Until next time, hug your pet!

Hello There. VivBounty here with a quick post to let you know we are live on the, “Adopted Dogs Progress”, page at Noah’s Arc Animal Rescue Shelter site where we found our precious dog, Pedro.

In a previous post, I shared with you how we adopted this large dog, raised him running on a beach in Spain for 4 years and then had to put him in a travel crate. Luckily, we had plenty of time to get him used to sleeping in the crate making it easy for him to walk into it without trauma when it came time to travel. See the story of how we got Pedro used to his pet travel carrier here.

It was fate that we saw that ad from the shelter and hope that this post will bring attention to the wonderful work this organization does to combat cruelty to animals. Bravo Noah’s Arc!

As the season approaches, remember, a pet is not an appropriate surprise Christmas gift. If you do decide to get or give a dog this season, please visit a reputable animal shelter first. Make sure the home is really ready for the responsibility of adopting another family member, as that is who the dog will be. There are so many dogs, just dying for a loving home and family.

Until next time, consider fostering a dog to see if you are really prepared to adopt one.

Prosperous Blessings,

VivBounty

Hello There, VivBounty here. While we are waiting for the rescue shelter in Spain to update their “Adopted Pets” page with our story, I would like to share with you how we got our dog Pedro used to his portable airline kennel.

In my previous post I wrote of us fostering two dogs in anticipation of adopting one of our own permanently. Tilly and Rafael prepared us for Pedro’s adoption, as I described in that blog entry, and as is often the case with pets, they helped us more than we helped them in our humble opinion.

Pedro came to us at 5 months old and by the time he was 4 years old, he weighed 75 lbs. When we adopted him, we did not anticipate leaving the continent nor the prospect of flying him anywhere. Well not only did we leave Spain, his life has been a travelling adventure, of course, as he has parents afflicted with wanderlust.

Hello There, VivBounty here with my HubPage about the two little dogs we fostered in Spain before we adopted Pedro, our Husky-Podenco mix.

Foster A Dog Before Adopting

This hub is dedicated to all the wonderful people in the rescue shelters around the world who work so tirelessly to end cruelty to animals.

When I wrote this piece I did not realize that the rescue shelter where Pedro came from had upgraded their Web site to include progress reports on their former boarders. We have since sent them our story, albeit 5 years on but are anxiously looking forward to posting a link to it here.

All the information you need about this wonderful little organization which does big work is in the article in my link above and please feel free to leave me any comments.

Until next time, hug your pet.
